Title: Director of Student Ministry
Position Status: Exempt, not eligible for overtime
Department: Department of Family Ministry
Reports to: Clergy Associate for Family Ministry
Effective Date: June 1, 2020
Champion the interests of students from 6th grade through the end of college, with the aim of bringing these young people to faith in Jesus Christ and into further growth and service as believers. Plan, coordinate, and deliver program activities for the student ministry. Recruit, develop, and direct team of adult volunteer leaders. Work directly in outreach and discipleship with middle and high school students on their turf. Connect with college students when they come back and visit on school breaks. Lead and implement special events. Help ensure best use of resources to achieve ministry objectives. Work on the family ministry team and assist in family ministry goals alongside the children’s ministry director with a special emphasis on 4th and 5th grade.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Implement and support department’s ministry plans – Assist Clergy Associate for Family Ministry in planning and carrying out student ministry goals to build relationships, evangelize, and disciple students. Speak, lead Bible studies, train ministry volunteers, pray with and for students and their parents, and manage activities. Suggest/initiate program improvements. Serve as leadership contact for interested students, parents, volunteer leaders, and others as required and maintain effective relationships and communication. Ensure plans and projects are sufficiently supported with volunteers, staff, technology, facilities, and communications. Plan and provide communication to/facilitate positive relationships with all key groups, which may include students, family members, vendors, venues, and other Holy Trinity departments. Assist with budget tracking and financial management. Track ministry results, provide reports as requested and perform other duties as assigned by the Clergy Associate for Family Ministry.
Work with staff, volunteers, students and parents – Designated champion for middle and high school students and families on the family ministry team. Participates with the family ministry team in weekly planning, bi-annual planning retreats, family events/programs, and other trainings and meetings as needed. Support the needs of the children’s ministry director. Work with student ministry intern and volunteer team in running programs of discipleship and outreach. Help recruit, train, supervise, develop, recognize and pray for teams of volunteers with skills needed to effectively minister to young people. Follow up on applications and background checks of volunteers. Interact with students and parents at school and club activities to foster communication, relationships, and spiritual growth. Connect and develop relationships with parents.
Trips and Events – Plan and run effective retreats, trips, and special events. Type of events vary in purpose and frequency but responsibilities include planning, scheduling vendors, defining and filling volunteer needs, communication, onsite support, knowing and meeting legal or organizational requirements, interacting with participants, travel, clean-up, and follow-up actions.
● 1-3 years experience in youth ministry
● BA in related field; combination of education and experience may be considered; some specialized
training in youth ministry preferred; some theological education preferred
● 1+ years experience leading a team of volunteers ● 1+ years experience working in a church setting ● Works well on teams and is a team player ● Self-starter ● Basic office technology skills (Microsoft Office- Excel, Word, Publisher, Outlook, Powerpoint) ● Satisfactory background check
