Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Senior Pastor and with guidance from the Church Council, the Director of Children and Youth Ministries (DCY) will envision, develop, and implement Christian Education experiences for our children, youth, and their families. The DCY will provide leadership of Federated Church ministries which involve all members under the age of 18 (referred to as children and youth). and their families. The DCY works closely with the Senior Pastor, the Director of Music and Worship, and volunteers. The DCY reports directly to the Senior Pastor.
This is a 20 hour per week, non-exempt (hourly) position, not to exceed a 40-hour maximum per pay period. The salary will be paid twice monthly at the rate of $25 per hour by the church. Supplemental pay may be available for seasonal events, with pre-approval of the Senior Pastor and/or Church Council. Mutual evaluation will be provided not less than three nor more than six months after beginning service date, and annually thereafter, by the Parish Personnel Committee.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
1. Developing content and leadership for Christian Education experiences for all children and youth, including planning and preparation for weekly Sunday activities and special events. Participating in Sunday morning worship, leading or planning for the leadership of our Time for Children.
2. Recruiting, training, and nurturing adult volunteers who are engaged in the ministry. Arranging for security clearance and training in Safe Sanctuary policies and maintaining records of such training (with assistance from the Office Administrator).
3. Helping to create cross-generational connections within the church where possible and helping plan special worship service experiences.
4. Creating events for the children and youth that engage the children and youth in the wider community, especially service oriented projects. This will include our summer camp program and youth mission/service trips as appropriate.
5. Coordinating with the Senior Pastor to co-create, co-lead and engage youth in confirmation.
6. Attending weekly staff meetings and participate in weekly worship leadership as appropriate.
- Managing the annual budgets for the CYM programs.
SEEKING THESE ATTRIBUTES and SKILLS:
This position requires a person with a strong Christian faith, enthusiasm, joy, and strong interpersonal skills for this vital ministry. We desire someone who enjoys being with children and youth and will work to create a Christian atmosphere of unconditional love, radical hospitality, and acceptance. Our DCY should model and create a safe and inclusive social group, while embedding Christian values in discussions, education, and mission outreach experiences. With support from the Senior Pastor, the DCY should be grounded in spiritual practices sufficient to guide young people in their faith journey and to refer them to further resources as appropriate.
Must communicate tactfully and effectively with families, congregation members, volunteers, and staff, and be able to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Federated Church is team-oriented in nature, encouraging collaboration among its members for the benefit of all. Well-developed skills with social media platforms and other means of electronic communication also desired. A complete background check and credit bureau report will be required. A Bachelor of Arts degree would be preferred, but not required.
